Cycling

Details

Our mountain bike trails has been an ongoing project for a year or two and we are currently negotiating with Safcol (a forestry company) to gain access to the exclusive river frontage area. This undulating area with its perennial river, pools and rapids, offers diverse terrain to explore by bike. We have enlisted the services of an experienced cycling trail planner to design the more challenging routes, and we want you to be THAT cyclist/runner who maps and shares your first ride on STRAVA with likeminded people.

We will have beginner, intermediate and expert trails. We wish to give everyone a chance to ride on Springgrove Estate and surrounding areas and to explore the views from all corners of the farm that are on offer. Until the above is finalised though, you are welcome to cycle around the estate and timber forests. Our estate caters for family-oriented cycling on easy existing gravel roads but also more challenging, long-distance routes for the cyclist who wants to escape the city

Fishing

Details

While staying on our farm, you can enjoy some bass fishing on a catch and release basis at the main dam situated in front our cottages on the hill. The dam in front of the Angunis has recorded lesser success in terms of fishing due to the amount of reeds, which we plan to clear to enable you to experience another dam location.

San Art

Gallery

Details

The ancient San folk  once occupied certain areas of Mpumulanga. They lived off the rich produce of the land and were experts in understanding its natural highs and lows.  These tribes left remnants of their lives and culture all over the countryside in the form of rock art.

These paintings adorn the rugged rock faces of the mountains and caves all around the country, and we consider ourselves very fortunate to have a few of these paintings near the vlei on Springgrove Estate. Many of them depict the spiritual side of their lives and its influence on their ancient customs and traditions.

These paintings are still visible but have started to fade over the years.

Please note because this is a heritage site that special permission will need to be obtained from authorities but we will assist where possible.

Goliath Footprint

Details

Goliath Footprint is just a short distance from Springgrove Estate and it promises visitors a peek into some of its mystery.

Was this once the home of giants?

A strange question under normal circumstances, perhaps. But, the prehistoric ‘footprint’ in the granite outcrop is certainly quite a convincing piece of evidence that giants once roamed this gorgeous part of South Africa. This imprint is about 120 centimetres long and bears the distinct shape of a bare foot.

Some believe that it’s a matter of natural erosion, while others firmly maintain that the imprint could only have been left by someone having put weight on soft rock, like molten lava. Whatever the case, it’s a fascinating find and a really fun sight for the whole family. Stand in the footprint for some seriously mysterious family pictures. Local African cultures have created myths and legends around the footprint and many visitors believe that there’s some sort of good luck to be had by tossing a coin in its ‘heel’. Some even attach religious significance to the print.
